Coleridge Walks the Fells [ISBN: 1 873551 002]

Though mainly remembered for his poetic achievements, Coleridge was also a remarkably able fell- walker.  His 'circumcursion' as he called it, covered well over 100 miles in distance, and involved the ascent and descent of more than 10,000 vertical feet.  He climbed along the highest mountains of the Lake District, visited most of its lakes and dales, touched the shore of the Irish Sea at St Bees and sat down on the summit of Scafell to write a letter.

It is thanks to Coleridge's letters and notebooks that we know of his journey at all.  And perhaps the power and immediacy of his descriptions that inspired Alan Hankinson to recreate his walk.
