Since 1991 The Munro Almanac has become an essential rucksack item for the thousands of hillwalkers and climbers who come to Scotland every year to enjoy the peaks which stand over 3000 feet (914m) and which are known as the Munros.  When Sir Hugh T Munro, Bart, of Lindertis first published his table of these mountains in 1891, he claimed that there were some 538 such tops, 283 of which he felt merited the status of separate mountains.  Prior to 1977 this list amounted to 277 but was amended after a survey bringing the current total to 284.
